Wrong-Way Driver

SALEM – A driver who erred on the road may have caused an accident that killed the driver and his passenger and sent two people to hospital, Salem police said.
The five-car accident occurred on Highland Street on Wednesday afternoon.
“He headed north on the south lane of Highland Street here and hit at least four other vehicles,” Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller said.
Traffic was still closed in both directions until 7 p.m.
“Salem and state police are responding to a major car crash on Highland Street,” Salem Police said at approximately 7 p.m.
A driver and passenger in a Ford Focus vehicle believed to be traveling in the wrong direction at the scene have been declared dead.

Another woman in the spotlight and a person in another car were taken to hospital with injuries believed to be serious, but not life-threatening.
Police said the focus hit at least four other cars.
