white shark New Jersey coast
SEA ISLE CITY, NJ – A few fishermen were surprised and excited to find a great white shark swimming near their boat along the Jersey Shore last weekend.
You can hear a voice saying off-camera: “Just off the coast of Sea Isle. Look at that monster!”
It was around noon on a Saturday when Jim Piazza was bringing his new boat after fishing for a few hours off the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey.
“I almost ran on it. My son was pointing at him like, ‘Hey, there’s a shark.'” And I’m like, “Impossible!” Jim, who spoke with Action News on Monday morning, said I circled it around for 10 minutes.
The videos they took attracted a lot of attention on social media after one was shared by Coast Guard Station Cape May over the weekend.
The sighting occurred one mile from the start of the Townsend entrance.
Marine science professor Steve Nagiewicz of Stockton University says that based on watching the videos, he believes it is indeed a great white shark.
He adds that the shark’s seemingly unfazed behavior is normal because the boat is not food.
Nagiewicz estimates it to be a teenage shark, possibly eight feet in length.
For stressed swimmers, sharks are always in our midst on the beach, so you should always be aware of your surroundings in the water, he said.
