A 911 dispatcher in Miami County, where the tornado began, said many calls were made, but details of the full extent of the injury were not immediately available.
The tornado landed near West Milton, about 16 miles northwest of Dayton, and traveled east toward the tip.
The city government of Teep said on Twitter at about 7:30 p.m. EDT:
“Severe weather hit multiple parts of Teep City this evening resulting in varying levels of damage.”
“Emergency crews have been sent to assess and assist the situation. We ask everyone to stay off the roads in the affected areas.”
About 36,000 homes and businesses were without power across southern Ohio as of 8:30 p.m., according to poweroutage.us.
Local media reported that a distribution center for discount chain Meijer was damaged in Tipp City, and several other businesses were affected.
Pictures showed that the warehouse collapsed.
The town’s police chief said there were no reports of injuries, according to the Dayton 24/7 Now news service.
The tornado was part of a decaying swarm of storms, or a medium-sized transportation system being transported through the Ohio Valley, Bell said.
