Tim Wilson loses Goldstein

Daniel was attracting the bulk of Labor and Green preferences.
After Daniel gave her victory speech, Wilson took to the podium at his event to address the remaining loyal supporters.
Independent candidate Zoe Daniel made history, convincingly winning the once-secure Liberal seat for Goldstein and ousting the incumbent, Tim Wilson, who refused to abdicate.
In front of a crowd of hundreds at Brighton Bowling Club in inner-south Melbourne, Daniel, 49, declared victory and promised to be an “honest broker of cross-seats”.
“Tonight is going to be one thing – long,” he said. “The good news is that despite the challenges we’re facing, we’re still, I think, in a very competitive position to get through the wires and make sure that we retain the federal voter for Goldstein.
The truth is that there are a lot of results that we don’t know. This is not out of blind belief or hope that things will somehow change but a simple, practical reality based on history.”
Goldstein has long been considered one of the safest Liberal Party seats in Victoria. It has been held by liberals and their predecessors since the Union.
In her victory speech, Danielle referred to Australian Lady Vida Goldstein, who competed unsuccessfully for the seat and was subsequently named.
Vida was not elected. This seat is in her name, and today I take her rightful place,” said Daniel.
“There’s still a lot to count, we’re still waiting for some major booths outside Brighton and Beaumaris,” campaign spokesperson Sam Shefhurst told the room at the Black Rock Yacht Club after 9pm.

“None of the previous polls counted, and none of the postal votes counted. More than half of voters voted early for this campaign, so it’s too early to look at the numbers in too much detail.”
With about 70 per cent of the votes counted, the Australian Election Commission (AEC) named Daniel in an expected vote after favoring 55 per cent to 44 per cent for Wilson.
It was a dramatic reversal for Wilson. He won the seat for the first time with a historic high vote in 2016 and an initial vote of 52.7 percent in 2019.
