Texas couple escapes Ukraine
Over the past year, Texas couple Kelsey and Tyrone Gag have made it their mission to adopt Ruslan, a 4-year-old boy from Ukraine.
But as Ukraine prepares for a possible war with Russia, the couple was running out of time to finalize the adoption process and bring their son home.
Texas couple escapes Ukraine with newly adopted
A San Antonio couple adopted a boy from eastern Ukraine, the same region where Russian troops are deployed.
The San Antonio couple were also having health concerns about Ruslan, who is said to have cerebral palsy and is on a feeding tube.
Because of the adoption rules in Ukraine, the Jagges were unable to finish the adoption until they traveled to the Eastern European country, they wrote in a fundraiser.
Kelci and Theron Jage spoke to FOX 4 from the Texas hospital where their newly adopted son, Ruslan, is now being treated.
The 4-year-old was born with cerebral palsy and spent his entire life in an orphanage.
The KAAB newspaper reported that when they entered Ukraine earlier in February, the Americans were asked to leave and the US Embassy urged them to leave. But not without Ruslan.
“We saw his picture even before we decided to adopt it,” she said. We were like, ‘Now is the time.’ There is no better time. “
Ukrainian officials argued that Ruslan’s adoption papers were invalid, but the ban was lifted when border guards learned of Ruslan’s deteriorating health, the couple told the New York Post.
