The accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on the 3000 block of Garrison Street NW, west of Rock Creek Park.

The Metropolitan Police Chief, Robert J. Conte III, said officers responded to a report of the burglary and found a man with metal stakes they believe smashed several windows in the house.

His identity has not been released, but the Metropolitan Police said he was between 20 and 30 years old.

The cops say the intruder used the metal stake to break in, and was unable to confirm whether breaking into the home was a crime of opportunity, or whether the burglar was there to steal a specific item.

The building he targeted serves as the Peruvian embassy in the United States, and the home of Peru’s ambassador to the United States Oswaldo de Rivero and his family.

De Rivero, his family, and his staff were at home during the 8 a.m. attack, but they all survived the accident unscathed.

Conte said the man approached the officers at the stake. He said that the officers initially fired their stun guns but then stopped the man.
The president said the officers shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Embassy or Peru later tweeted: “The ambassador, his family, lodging staff and Secret Service agents are safe.”

Authorities said they are investigating why the man was in the house.
