Shoppers who fled Oakridge Mall in San Jose shot dead Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off California coast

San Jose police said they received several calls about an altercation that resulted in a shooting near a Forever 21 store at 5:48 p.m.

The officers, who had no idea if the killer was inside the mall, responded within minutes and entered the mall.

Shortly after 6pm, authorities posted on Twitter to warn the community not to take refuge there. San Jose police earlier confirmed that there was no active shooting at the mall after one person was killed Monday night.

According to the SJPD, the shooting at the mall was an isolated incident. They say it will take several hours to clean the mall, which is large and has many entrances and exits.

Officers patrolled the mall and helped shoppers get to safety. Officers from Santa Clara County were at the scene. They said they were also looking for the killer and the victim.

An employee at the mall, who asked not to be identified, said he heard a loud “bang” that sounded like a “gun” before the crowds of shoppers started screaming and crying.

Center management will send instructions to employees who need to secure their stores, and a collection center has been set up in the Home Depot parking lot at Building 900 by Blossom Hill Road.

Those encountered at the scene are asked to remain there until officers come to pick them up. Authorities say more information will be released on Tuesday morning as investigations continue.
