Ryan Grantham, 24, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the first 14 years in the British Columbia Superior Court in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Grantham, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges in March, admitted shooting his mother in the back of the head while she played the piano at their home in Squamish, North Vancouver, on March 31, 2020.

Prosecutors said that one day after the murder, the former child packed a car with three rifles, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a Google map with directions to Mr Trudeau’s home in Rideau Cottage.

He also allegedly wrote in a diary of his intent to kill Mr Trudeau and in a police statement.

He drove 200 kilometers east to Hope before turning around, and thought of committing an act of mass violence at Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver or at Simon Fraser University, where he was a student.

Instead, he drove to a Vancouver police station where he told one of the officers, “You killed my mom.”

Grantham began acting professionally at the age of nine and played the supporting role of Jeffrey Augustine on one episode of The CW Show Riverdale in 2019.

He also appeared in the TV show Supernatural and the 2010 film Dairy of a Wimpy Kid.

During the trial, his defense argued that he had been suffering from anxiety, self-loathing, and clinical depression, and had expressed a desire to commit suicide or violence against others in the months leading up to his mother’s murder.

He toured the murder by secretly approaching his mother from behind with a gun, the court was told, and Go-Pro footage of one of his corridors was shown as evidence.

In one of the videos taken after the murder, he filmed his mother’s body saying, “She was shot in the back of the head.

In the moments that followed, she would have known I was.” Grantham then spent the hours after the murder smoking marijuana, drinking beer, and trying to make Molotov cocktails.

The next day he arranged candles around his mother’s body before setting off in his car. His sister discovered their mother’s body that evening after calls and messages went unanswered.

Two psychiatric reports commissioned after the murder found that Grantham had a cannabis use disorder after years of heavy use, but was able to maintain an outward appearance that he was functioning normally.

According to reports, Grantham told experts he wanted to kill his mother to spare her witnessing the violence he was planning to commit.

Grantham was an experienced user of firearms and was a member of a gun club.

Prosecutors said he purchased the 22-caliber rifle in the months leading up to the murder knowing he was feeling homicidal.
