Brittney Griner, Russia Claims Brittney Griner ‘Not a Hostage’ But a Law Breaker, the U.S. government to be “wrongfully detained” in Russia, should not be described as a “hostage,” a Russian official told NBC News.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, made the comments in an exclusive interview with Keir Simmons published on Monday.

Grenier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a member of the Phoenix Mercury WNBA team, has been detained in Russia since February 17 on drug charges.

Russian authorities have reported that they were found in possession of e-cigarette cartridges containing cannabis oil.

The US State Department considers Greiner an “unjustly held”, and the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs is implicated in her case.

In the report published Monday, Simmons said that “the US government is now treating this as a hostage situation,” a term that Peskov contradicts.

“I would strongly oppose that,” Peskov told Simmons. We can’t call her a hostage.”

“She violated Russian law and is now on trial. It’s not about her being a hostage,” Greiner added.

Simmons pressed Peskov about Grenier’s detention, saying that she is “coming to participate in sport in Russia, and is really trying to build bridges through sport” and that her detention sends a “horrible message.”

Peskov also disputed this statement.

“I think it’s also a terrible message that we are bringing some gems and prohibited items to this country while it’s trying to build some bridges,” Simmons told Simmons.

“He is being sued by law, so we can’t do anything about it.”

The media, citing the Russian media organization TASS, reported that the Russian authorities extended Grenier’s detention on June 14.

The extension keeps her in Russia custody until at least July 2, according to the Associated Press.

As news of her prolonged detention spread, people expressed their anger on social media.
