Shark attack on Sydney beach, killing one person

BRIDGWATER, NJ – An investigation is underway into how officers handled a fight between two teens at a New Jersey mall.

As reports, some wonder if teens were treated differently because of their race.

Last weekend in a mall in Somerset County, Bridgewater police officers responded to a fight between two teens – one black and one Latino who appeared to be white.

It took nearly 20 seconds for the officers to get into the fight – which was captured on video – to find the teens squabbling on the floor with the Latino teen over the head of the black teen.

A black eighth grader student Two officers knelt on his back to tie his hands while the other teenager involved in the fight was seen sitting on a sofa.

“I was really confused about, like, why would they see me as a bad person, like, me as an aggressor,” said Key, 14, who asked not to use his last name.

Key says the quarrel broke out after he sided with a friend who was chosen by the other teen.

He says watching a video of officers on top of him for nearly 30 seconds is frightening and frustrating.

15-year-old Joey, who was involved in the fight, also told WPIX – with his mother’s permission – he couldn’t believe he wasn’t also handcuffed.

“I knew it was a mistake, and I knew there would be problems when they did,” he said. “They didn’t go for me.”

He added, “I didn’t understand why. I even offered to have my hands tied too.”

The NAACP in New Jersey issued a statement saying in part that it was “disappointed to see yet another police measure demonstrating conclusively the disparate treatment of African Americans in our police establishments.”

The NAACP is calling for the officers to be removed from the force pending investigation.
