Crews are working to put out several fires burning across Nebraska that have killed at least one person, injured three firefighters and killed 100 calves.

According to the Nebraska National Guard, the state’s Emergency Operations Center was activated Friday night to coordinate the statewide response to the fires raging in the western and central parts of the state.

The man who died Friday night was a retired Cambridge fire chief who had been working with firefighters as a monitor in Red Willow County in the southwest corner of the state.

Alyssa Sanders, of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, said John B. Trumbull, 66, of Arapahoe, was overcome by smoke and fire after his car left the road due to poor visibility from smoke and dust.
His body was found early Saturday.

Sanders said 15 firefighters were injured in the fires, including five in the blaze that killed Trumbull, but said the government agency had no details of their injuries.

Firefighting teams responded to wildfire reports in 14 counties. The Incident Management Team at Rocky Mountain Complex 1 took over as of Sunday.

Fires have been reported in 14 counties across the state since Friday, including Perkins, Dandy, Port, Butler, Scotts Bluff, Cheyenne, Doyle, Blaine, Sherry, Brown and Thomas counties.

The other fires were mostly extinguished or contained by noon Sunday, the government agency said.
The agency did not provide estimates for the total area burned or the number of homes or other buildings destroyed.

John Trumble was killed and 11 firefighters were injured during those fires, they tweeted to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency has reported that Trumbull, the retired fire chief, was overwhelmed by smoke and fire while working as a monitor in Red Willow County.

Several small towns, including Cambridge, Bartley, Indianola and Wilsonville, in southwestern Nebraska and Missy in its northeastern, were forced to evacuate temporarily by the fires.
Eviction orders were lifted on Saturday.
