HOUSTON (Associated Press) – Interpreter: Concern is mounting as Melissa Lucio’s execution approaches.

Nearly half of the jurors who sentenced a Texas woman to death for the death of one of her 14 children in 2007 have called for a halt to her upcoming execution and for her to receive a new trial.

EXPLAINER: Concern mounts as Melissa Lucio’s execution nears

Melissa Lucio, 52, is scheduled to be executed Wednesday for the death of her two-year-old daughter, Maria, in Harlingen, a city of about 75,000 people in the southern tip of Texas.

Her lawyers say new evidence shows that Mariah’s injuries, including a blow to the head, were caused by falling down a steep staircase, and several lawmakers and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, an advocate for criminal justice reform, and Amanda Knox – an American.
Who was convicted of murdering a British student in Italy and whose conviction was overturned – has rallied to the cause of Lucio.

But prosecutors maintain that the girl was a victim of child abuse.

Lucio’s lawyers filed various legal challenges seeking to stop her execution.

She also has a request for clemency before the Texas Board of Pardon and Parole, which is due to hear her case on Monday.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott could also play a role in deciding Lucio’s fate.

If Lucio is executed, she will be the first Latina woman ever executed by a Texan and the first woman executed by the state since 2014.

Here’s what to know when Lucio’s execution approaches:

What issues are being considered in the case?

Lucio’s lawyers say her conviction for murder was based on a forced and unreliable confession that was the result of diligent interrogation and her long history of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.

They say that Lucio was not allowed to present evidence questioning the veracity of her confession.

Her lawyers also maintained that unscientific and false evidence misled jurors into believing that Maria’s injuries might have been caused by physical abuse rather than medical complications from a severe fall.

“I knew what she was accused of was not true.
My children have always been my world, and although my choices in life have not been good, I would never have hurt any of my children in this way.
Lucio wrote in a letter to Texas lawmakers.

Where are your efforts to stop the execution?

Appeals seeking to stop Lucio’s execution are pending in state and federal courts.
