LARGO, Florida – A possible crocodile attack killed a 47-year-old man in the Tampa Bay area Tuesday, according to police.

The Tampa ABC reports that the man, who set off alarm systems, who has not been identified, was searching for a Frisbee in a lake in John S. Taylor Park in Largo when the potential attack occurred.

The Largo Police Department says investigators believe the man entered the water looking for a Frisbee.

The Florida Commission on Fish and Wildlife and alarm systems confirmed that the 47-year-old was bitten by an alligator, and police say he eventually died.

Largo is located south of Clearwater in Pinellas County.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission responded along with a fisherman for Lake Taylor.

Crocodile hunters were sent to Lake Taylor shortly thereafter.

Authorities are urging people to stay away from the area for the time being.

Police say there are signs hanging asking people not to swim in the lake.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area, and signs nearby warn not to go swimming or near the lake at any time.

Florida has not had a fatal crocodile attack since 2019.

Since the agency began tracking crocodile attacks in 1948, only 26 have turned out to be fatal.
