tornado watch issued in west-central Minnesota, another round of storms

A 20-year-old man drowned while swimming in Lake Lanier during Memorial Day weekend.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said game rangers responded to the scene to help locate the man using side-scan sonar.

Then the provincial fire department recovered the body of the unidentified man.

Lake Lanier, on the outskirts of Atlanta, was established by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s, in part for flood management.

According to the corps, the lake in its depths is about 160 feet deep.

The area is a popular tourist and leisure destination and has been the site of many drownings over the years.

Two men drowned hours apart in Lake Lanier in May 2019.

Last year, authorities found the body of a man who washed up on a beach. WXIA reported at the time that the man looked like he had been in the water for a week.

The lake has been subject to rumors and speculation, with some believing that it occurred by flooding a town and that the corpses that might be beneath it are haunted by it.

Donald Glover’s popular FX series, “Atlanta,” referenced the urban legend using a fictional lake at its third season premiere in March.

The Legion denied the story, even posting a response to its Frequently Asked Questions web page.

“No, when land was acquired to build the lake in the early 1950s, the area was mostly farmland,” the website said.

“The government purchased the land from about 700 families on an area of 56,000 acres.
Most of the buildings that were removed or demolished were farmhouses and outbuildings such as barns.”
