Lawrence, Mass – Firefighters are battling a massive fire in Lawrence that appears to have spread to several triplex floors. At least 16 families in the densely populated area have been affected.
Emergency crews were called to Crosby Street around 9:50 p.m. Friday and upon arrival found thick smoke and flames billowing in the air.
Firefighters from a number of nearby communities were called in to help.
Due to strong winds of up to 30 miles per hour, the fire quickly spread to several other floors nearby.
All residents managed to escape safely, and there were no reports of injuries, said Brian Moriarty, Lawrence’s fire chief.
Flames and thick smoke were seen from at least a mile away, and aerial footage of the scene showed intense flames billowing into the dark night sky.
Roads in the area have been closed and people urged to avoid the area while crews work to put out the flames.
It is not yet clear how the fire started and if anyone was injured.
Firefighting teams from a number of nearby areas provided assistance with the fire
, including Bellerica, Lowell, North Reading, Salisbury, West Newbury, Reading, Groveland, Dracotte, Andover, North Andover, Haverhill, Georgetown, Amsbury and Wilmington, Massachusetts. As well as Salem and Londonderry in New Hampshire.
