Two college students were shot dead Thursday evening in a church parking lot in Ames, Iowa, before the shooter aimed his gun, police said.

Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald said at a news conference Friday that the Cornerstone Church shooting was the result of a “home situation” between the shooter, a 33-year-old man from Boone, and one of the women.

He said the two women, ages 22 and 21, were students at nearby Iowa State University.

A third woman survived unharmed, he said, adding that the shooter used a 9mm pistol.

“This is a very tragic event for our community, but I also think it’s nationwide where we’re seeing violent incidents nationwide, and they seem to be increasing,” said Capt. Nicholas Linney of the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting came on the same night that President Joe Biden addressed the nation about the need for stricter gun laws.

The gun massacres have shaken the country and sparked new discussions about how to prevent it.

The most recent incident was just a day earlier, when a man purchased an AR-15 rifle and attacked a hospital in Oklahoma, killing four people and then killing himself.

In Iowa, authorities received a call for a parking lot shooting at 6:51 p.m., they said.

Fitzgerald said the shooter was arrested May 31 on charges of third-degree harassment and impersonation of a public servant, all related to his recent separation from one of the victims.

He sent a pledge, Fitzgerald said, and was due to return to court on June 10.

Fitzgerald said the shooting happened during the first summer night of the Youth Bible Study Program.

There were about 80 high school and college students in the church hall.

“Our hearts are broken for all involved, and we are praying for all those affected,” Reverend Mike Vance said in a statement.

“Our ministry staff is ready to support all those affected, and we will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities as they complete their full investigation.”
