Human remains found at Camarillo
CAMARELLO, CA – Human remains have been found in a garbage container at an apartment complex in Camarillo, authorities said.
According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call in “suspicious circumstances” shortly before 7 a.m. Friday.
Capt. Cameron Henderson said potential remains were reported around 6:50 a.m. on block 300 of the Townsite Promenade.
The site is located in a residential area on the south side of Ponderosa Drive, generally west of Las Posas Road.
After the initial report, Henderson said, the mayor’s investigators were not immediately able to confirm that the discovery involved a person.
But shortly after 12:30 p.m., an investigator from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the remains were human.
Confirmation launched a murder investigation.
Henderson said the remains belonged to an adult, but declined to reveal other details. The sheriff’s office has been contracted to provide police services in Camarillo.
At midday, the area in front of the apartment was closed off with yellow police tape and the new police mobile driving vehicle was erected on the street.
A parking lot at the back of the building is marked with red crime scene tape.
As of 3:30 PM, no additional details were available. Henderson said the agency’s major crimes unit remained at the scene.
He said key details – including whether the murder took place at the site or whether the remains were removed, and what their condition was – were still being investigated.
It is unclear how the human remains ended up in the dumpster and the identity of the victim is unknown.
As homicide detectives continue their investigation, they reassure the neighbors, saying it is safe for them to walk around the complex.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities.
