Hank the Tank black bear
A huge brown bear named Hank the Tank has been wanted by California police to break into dozens of homes in a Lake Tahoe neighborhood since last summer.
A 500-pound black bear nicknamed “Hank the Tank” has kept California authorities on alert after storming at least 38 homes in South Lake Tahoe since last week.
CBS Sacramento reported that because the wild beast was wreaking havoc in the area, homeowners and wildlife officials remained ignorant of what to do with it.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife issued a shooting order Thursday to ensure public safety.
Hank is twice the size of the average black bear, and is said to have broken windows and doors in local communities.
Authorities say euthanasia may be necessary because the wild animal has become so comfortable around humans.
Wildlife groups are calling for it to be relocated to a reserve.
They called for Hank to be locked up and sent to a shelter rather than killed.
and Lake Tahoe residents to be more vigilant about securing their own food and waste.
The black bear population has exploded in recent years, tripling in size over the past three decades.
This, along with the fact that wildfires destroyed their natural habitat, prompted the animals to go into people’s homes, cars, and trash cans in search of food.
