DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The Republican candidate for governor of Michigan, Ryan Kelly, was arrested Thursday on misdemeanor charges related to his involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, according to the Department of Justice.

Ryan Kelly, 40, of Allendale, Michigan, was arrested this morning on misdemeanor charges arising from the January 6, 2021 Capitol Breach.

He was arrested in Allendale. Mr. Kelly will appear for the first time this afternoon in the US region.

“Western District Court in Michigan,” said Bill Miller, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s office in the District of Columbia.

The FBI’s Detroit field office confirmed Kelly’s arrest and said his home was searched Thursday morning.

“I can confirm that FBI agents from the Grand Rapids bureau executed a warrant for a search and arrest at Mr. Kelly’s residence in Allendale, Michigan.

At this time, I cannot provide any information on the nature of the charges against Mr. Kelly, although I expect more. Mara Schneider, the FBI’s Detroit Public Affairs Officer, said in a written statement:

Information to be released soon.

CNN has reached out to Kelly’s campaign.

In 2020, Kelley, the real estate broker, began leading rallies against COVID shutdowns and mandates in Michigan, according to his website.

He said he has led rallies against COVID restrictions in the state capital of Lansing and Grand Rapids.

The governor candidate added that he “guarded a civil war statue in his hometown of Allendale” during protests in the summer of 2020.

A crowded field of Republicans is vying to face Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in one of the most closely watched election campaigns the country has seen this fall.
