Elvis Costello, a rock pioneer, is back on tour this summer after Covid-19 halted his shows in earlier times. But with not a single VWV song it would be missing from his playlist.

Singer Elvis Costello says he has decided not to perform “Oliver’s Army” at the concert after this time, due to a racist adjective attached to the lyrics, so he also urged radio stations to skip this tune and not repeat it instead of playing a censored version.

“If I could go back in time and write that song today, I would probably think twice about it,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer said in an interview with The Telegraph.

The word in question is often used in that song as an insult against blacks. Although it was also used, in Costello’s song, against a white person in the period of turmoil in Northern Ireland during the events of the last century.

The 67-year-old music icon, who grew up in Birkenhead, has taken a defensive stance over a seditious element of the song due to a historical “fact”.
But he demands to stop broadcasting it and says he will stop performing it before anyone “accuses” him of “something he did not mean.”

As such, Costello will no longer perform “Oliver’s Army”, although it was a huge success in 1979 in the United Kingdom, and he appealed to radio stations to stop playing the song as well in an interview with the Telegraph.

“This is what my grandfather changed into known as within the British Army – it is a historic fact,” Costello stated. “But human beings pay attention that phrase burst off like a bell and accuse me of some thing I failed to mean.”

Costello additionally stated that radio stations have to pass the track altogether in place of play the censored model it is regularly used now.

“They make it worse through whistling for sure. Because they spotlight it afterwards,” he stated. “Just do not play the drum!”
