Killed Officer Elwood, new details emerge

Laurel, Neb. – The Nebraska State Patrol, Deaths in Laurel, multiple authorities investigating, a situation with multiple fatalities that occurred in Laurel early Thursday morning.

The situation includes multiple scenes in the Cedar County community and is an active investigation.

Cody Thomas, a spokesman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said state investigators were heading to Laurel and would likely take the lead in investigating what happened.

“Both houses were on fire, that’s all I know,” Thomas said.

He said he did not know how many people died or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Several witnesses reported seeing or hearing an explosion at around 3:00 am and officials in protective suits were seen walking towards the scene by mid-morning Thursday.

Local businesses and other buildings in Laurel are reportedly closed. Teacher training in Wakefield is currently also affected, with witnesses in Wakefield stating that the school there too is closed.

The investigation is still active, although a number of first responders left the scene to start an active fire on the same street.

Authorities say the fire has nothing to do with the accident.

The NSP will hold a press conference at 3:30 p.m. to address the situation, according to a press release sent by NSP spokesperson Cody Thomas on Thursday afternoon.
