Havana – Heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Agatha flooded much of western Cuba on Friday, killing at least three people in Havana.

Cuban officials said that thousands of residents in the area were without electricity and one man was missing in Pinar del Río province.

“Heavy rain and electrical storms have hit the western and central regions of Cuba with accumulations of more than 200 millimeters (eight inches), and will continue today and tomorrow Saturday,” the Cuban Meteorological Office (INSMET) said.

A 44-year-old man, initially thought to be missing, was found dead Friday evening in the western province of Pinar del Rio after falling into a creek, according to local news website Cuba Depati.

They also reported the disappearance of another person in the area.

The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said Agatha has crashed in southern Mexico with the potential to be redeveloped as a tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean.

They also reported the disappearance of another person in the area.

Insmett said that the heavy rains so far “caused flooding in localities from Pinar del Rio (far west) to Sancti Spiritos (central) and in the municipality of the private island of Juventud (south of Havana).”

Pictures of state media, with parts of the capital submerged, showed rescuers in areas of central Havana evacuating people in boats.

Authorities say nearly 2,000 people have decided to evacuate their homes, while about 50,000 customers in Havana County are without power.

“People are almost in the water,” said Luis Antonio Torres, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in the capital.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins each year on June 1 and ends on November 30 for the North Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean.
