Elgin Bridge Fire, prompts evacuations, road closures

SB I-5 crash shuts down on Ship Canal Bridge, SEATTLE – One driver is missing after two-vehicle rollover crashes on I-5 southbound at Ship Canal Bridge Tuesday morning.

SEATTLE – A two-vehicle rollover has closed all lanes of Southbound Interstate 5 on the Ship Canal Bridge in the Seattle University area.

A missing driver is believed to have been driven into the water below, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

The southbound lanes are completely blocked as a result of the accident.
This is now being treated as a “recovery mission,” according to the Seattle Fire Department.

The Washington State Patrol said they recognized one of the drivers, but the other is missing.
They determined that the driver had been thrown into the water as a result of the collision.

The accident occurred south of Northeast 45th Street around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic has been diverted to northeast 45th Street.
Express lanes are open to southbound traffic.

The Seattle Fire Department tweeted that water rescue teams were dispatched to Fifth Avenue NE and NE North Lake Road near Ivar’s Salmon home for a possible person in the water below the bridge.

The unmissable driver, 22, has been arrested, according to Seattle firefighting crews, on suspicion of having a DUI, according to soldiers.

Although rescue swimmers and a diver searched around the docks and under the bridge for an hour, he was never found.
Tinsley said the search is now a recovery task, based on how much time the man spent in the water.

Drivers should avoid the area, as it is not yet known when southbound lanes will reopen.
