MEXICO CITY — Authorities on the Gulf coast of Mexico said the bodies of seven men have been found dumped on a roadway in the Huasteca region, long popular among tourists.

Prosecutors in San Luis Potosi state said late Thursday that the bodies did not appear to be from the town of Akesimón, and may have been killed elsewhere and dumped in a rural area.
Pictures of the corpses showed severe bruises on the corpses, suggesting that they had been beaten.
Books marked on the bodies read “This is what happened to me because of working with the Gulf,” an apparent reference to the Gulf Cartel, which operates primarily along the US border to the north.
The letters were signed “Operation Vales O.P.”, an apparent reference to a rival gang.
Huastica has long been popular with Mexican tourists for its waterfalls and crystalline rivers.
