KABUL, Afghanistan – A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan overnight, causing adobe and ash homes to collapse onto sleeping families, adding a new emergency to a country already in so much suffering.

More than 900 people were killed in an earthquake in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s state news agency reported that more than 1,000 people were killed and more than 600 wounded.

They quoted Deputy Minister of State for Natural Disaster Management Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim.

This number could not be immediately confirmed because the quake hit remote areas.

To give an idea of the scale of the devastation, the Bakhtar news agency uploaded a video of an unnamed man whose cell phone was swinging to pick up collapsed houses in the morning light.

“I’m making this video to show that all the people here are under the building,” he says. Under that house five people.

This house has six people. He turns to another pile of rubble:
“And in this house, 13 bodies are still underground,” he said. “The village is completely destroyed,” he says, swinging his camera up the hill.

overwhelming sadness, home security

A photo published by the news agency showed men pulling what appeared to be a small body wrapped in a blanket from under the rubble, while the man lit the scene with what appeared to be a small flashlight between his teeth.

A later video clip showed men lying on a stretcher amid the rubble.

The worst affected areas were remote farming villages in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika and Khost provinces – areas so remote that Afghan authorities sent seven helicopters and a medical team to help with the rescue mission.

These provinces border the rugged mountains of northwest Pakistan.

A lawmaker who represents one of those neighboring Pakistani districts, Mohsen Dawar, posted photos with NPR showing homes scattered in piles of rubble.

So far, he said, it was not clear what happened to the men, women and children who slept in them.

She added that the disaster hit a country already afflicted by many hardships. “This is a very poor population group, with high unemployment rates, and they are experiencing the worst drought in 37 years,” she said.

There is also a chronic malnutrition crisis.” “We are seeing outbreaks of preventable diseases such as measles and acute watery diarrhoea.”

The United Nations is struggling to raise enough money to cover its needs for this year – which includes helping to feed nearly half of Afghanistan’s forty million people.

The quake occurred approximately 300 miles from where the most powerful earthquake struck western Pakistan in 2008, causing landslides and killing 166 people.
