7-Year-Old Girl Dies After Getting Rescued From House Fire in Norwalk
HARTFORD – A 7-year-old girl died of injuries sustained in a house fire on Nelson Street in Norwalk on Saturday morning, fire officials said.
Firefighters were called to start a house fire on Nelson Street shortly before 5 a.m.
The crew said the house was completely involved in a fire when they arrived, and there were reports of a person trapped inside.
Neighbors said they woke up to what sounded like explosions or fireworks nearby.
According to investigators, power lines across the road caught fire, as well as two cars in the front yard of the house.
Officials said Norwalk firefighters responded to the blaze and reports of a child trapped inside the house shortly before 5 a.m.
Officials said a man, woman and boy escaped and were in the backyard trying to rescue a 7-year-old girl who was sleeping in a second-floor bedroom.
The man broke his arm and suffered burns after falling while trying to climb out the window.
The firefighters immediately raised a ladder to the window.
One of the firefighters entered the burning room, found the child, passed her through the window to the crews of the ladder, and she was carried to the floor.
The girl was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries, officials said.
Officials said a number of firefighters suffered minor injuries in putting out the flames.
A Norwalk firefighter was also burned and treated at the scene.
The cause of the fires is still under investigation.
